Distance Supervision of LPC Associates: Things to Consider

Distance Supervision of LPC Associates

Things to Consider

In Texas, distance supervision is allowed by the LPC Board, but there are some things to consider when providing this service:

Supervision is a crucial component of the training and development of Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs). Distance supervision, which involves providing supervision remotely, offers both benefits and challenges. Here are some key considerations for distance supervision of LPC Associates:

1. State Regulations: Ensure compliance with state licensing board regulations regarding distance supervision. Some states have specific requirements for the format and frequency of supervision sessions conducted remotely. In Texas, all supervision can be conducted remotely, but you still must meet all state requirements.

2. Technology: Choose reliable and secure communication tools for distance supervision, such as video conferencing, phone calls, or telehealth platforms. Ensure that both you and the LPC Associate have access to the necessary technology and a stable internet connection.

3. Confidentiality: Discuss and establish procedures for maintaining client confidentiality during remote supervision sessions. Use encrypted and secure communication platforms to protect sensitive information.

4. Ethical Considerations: Distance supervision must adhere to the same ethical guidelines as in-person supervision. Address issues related to boundaries, dual relationships, and informed consent with the LPC Associate.

5. Supervision Agreement: Develop a clear supervision agreement that outlines the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of both the supervisor and the LPC Associate. Include details about the format and frequency of supervision sessions, methods of communication, and the supervisor's availability.

6. Goals and Objectives: Collaboratively set goals and learning objectives for the supervision process. These goals should be aligned with the LPC Associate’s professional development and state licensing requirements.

7. Record-Keeping: Maintain thorough and organized records of supervision sessions, including notes, feedback, and any agreements reached. These records can be critical in case of ethical or legal issues.

8. Cultural Competency: Consider the cultural and diversity factors involved in distance supervision, as well as the impact of cultural differences on the therapeutic process. Encourage the LPC Associate to be sensitive to cultural issues, even when working remotely.

9. Professional Development: Promote ongoing professional development by discussing relevant training opportunities, resources, and literature. Stay up to date with current counseling trends and best practices. Though LPC Associates are not required to acquire any CEs while under supervision, it’s still important to motivate Associates to engage in additional training/learning opportunities.

10. Feedback and Evaluation: Provide constructive feedback and evaluations to help the LPC Associate grow and develop as a professional counselor. Encourage self-reflection and self-assessment.

11. Emergency Protocols: Establish protocols for handling emergencies or crises that may arise during remote supervision sessions. Ensure that the LPC Associate knows how to respond to critical situations and has access to local resources. You may want to create an emergency plan with your Associates so they know how to reach you in these circumstances, or who to contact if you’re not available.

12. Legal and Ethical Updates: Stay informed about any changes in state and federal laws, as well as ethical guidelines, that may impact the practice of LPCs. Share this information with the LPC Associate during supervision. In Texas, you can stay informed of all updates by signing up for the LPC Updates email HERE.

13. Supervision Hours: Monitor and document the LPC Associate’s progress in accumulating the required supervision hours for licensure. Ensure that they are meeting the minimum requirements set by the licensing board. In distance supervision, this means regularly reviewing hours through a Zoom call, or requesting the Associate email you his/her hours logs on occasion for review.

14. Supervision Fee: If applicable, discuss and agree on the supervision fee structure and payment methods for distance supervision.

15. Self-Care: Encourage the LPC Associate to prioritize self-care and well-being, especially when working remotely, as the boundary between work and personal life can blur.

16. Feedback on Distance Supervision: Regularly seek feedback from the LPC Associate about their experience with distance supervision and make necessary adjustments to enhance the effectiveness of the process.

Distance supervision can be a valuable tool for LPCs, especially in situations where in-person supervision is not feasible. By addressing these considerations, supervisors can help ensure a successful and ethical remote supervision experience for their supervisees.
